A cavity is a small area of decay on one of your teeth. Minor cavities can be filled in a simple procedure that involves removing the decayed enamel with a drill and filling it with an artificial substance. A tooth’s location, size and appearance in your smile will greatly determine what material your dentist recommends for the filling. There are two main types of dental fillings available in our office: amalgam fillings and composite fillings.
Amalgam fillings are also very durable. Amalgam is almost never used for teeth that are prevalent in your smile due to the fact it is dark in color.
Composite fillings are made from a resin material that can be color matched and placed in a single procedure.
If you have a cavity on one or more of your teeth, you should have it repaired as soon as possible. Left unchecked, the extent of the tooth decay can compromise more enamel or the root of the tooth.
